Compliance
Data protection, licensing, and what we claim.
The regulatory posture the product is built to, the licence terms the public corpus comes under, and the limits we put on our own claims.
In brief
- UK GDPR / ICO-style accountability is a design constraint, not a later bolt-on.
- No formal ISO 27001 claim yet. The architecture is built so certification is not blocked later.
- UK judgments in Search are re-used under a transactional licence from The National Archives, with the required acknowledgement shown alongside results.
- Product claims stay conservative until evaluation and operational controls justify stronger language.
Compliance posture
Obiter is not being built in a neutral environment. Privacy law, corpus licensing, and firm-grade audit expectations shape the product directly.
The platform is designed from the start to align with UK GDPR / GDPR, ICO-style accountability, and ISO 27001-friendly operational controls. That does not mean formal certification from day one. It means the architecture should not block those requirements later.
Public source licensing
UK judgments available through Search come from curated public sources, including material under the National Archives Find Case Law service and the Open Justice Licence.
Computational analysis of Find Case Law records requires a licence from The National Archives. Obiter Research Limited holds a transactional licence, and its use of the corpus stays within the purpose that licence sets out. Upstream licence status is treated as a first-class constraint: withdrawn or revised judgments are removed, and judgment pages are excluded from search engines.
Legislation needs a different ingestion model from case law (provision structure, amendments, commencement, versioning). Legislation search remains on the roadmap for Search; it is not claimed as shipping today.
Conservative claims
Obiter makes conservative product claims. Citation treatment, verification confidence, and compliance posture are framed carefully until evaluation and operational controls justify stronger language.
